hazeyjane at The Stables

Creation of Northamptonshire-based composer, acclaimed acoustic guitarist and singer Chris Brown, hazeyjane is the vehicle for the musical expression of his own original songs and adaptive arrangements of celebrated pieces of poetry.

Chris' voice is often said to resemble that of David Sylvian. His ambient acoustic guitar style uses unusual tunings and spider capos to create exquisite guitar figures and motifs that give the songs distinctively airy, graceful and spacious qualities.

The soundscape settings are enriched by the complementary legato style and signature singing sound of Kevin T Ward’s fretless bass and his use of harmonics, stopping and chords to add rhythmic expression, texture and colour.

Since autumn 2016, Chris and Kevin have been recording with celebrated world percussionist David 'Hopi' Hopkins, whose nuanced, percussive sounds add richly to hazeyjane’s musical moodscapes.

A five-track EP titled Kanré, the historic name of the remote place where it was recorded at David’s home in rural Brittany, was launched at Folk on the Pier in Cromer in May 2017 when hazeyjane played in trio format for the first time in the UK.

In July 2018, the trio played Stables 2 in Wavendon with special guest vocalists Corinne Lucy and Stephen Jones, who have often since supplemented the line-up with Stephen also now adding percussion too when David Hopkins is not available.

Corinne Lucy’s beguiling vocal talents provide exquisite harmonic detail to hazeyjane’s songscapes and combine fascinatingly with Stephen Jones’ remarkably arresting improvisational skills.

Recent concert venues have included Eyemouth Hippodrome (Scotland) and the famous Zeffirellis Jazz Bar restaurant in Ambleside. The band have played in folk clubs, arts centres, libraries, restaurants and at many festivals.

Most rewarding to a listening and discerning audience, hazeyjane aim to produce mellow and melodic music that is, in turns, intense and intimate, dreamy and dynamic, relaxing and hauntingly atmospheric; music that, ultimately, seeks the sublime.

Debut album ONE, recorded and mastered at Tu-kay Records in Stoke Bruerne, was released in summer 2016 with reviewers writing of ‘dense multi-layered arrangements…gorgeous guitar figures’ and songs that ‘create a dreamy atmosphere’ with ‘a strong poetic bent’.

Chris and Kevin are now working with David, Stephen, Corinne and other special guests, from the UK and France, on the next hazeyjane album, which it is hoped will be ready for release in 2019.

hazeyjane have a unique sound of atmospheric guitar and fretless bass, combined with three strikingly different vocalists.
